Choosing and deciding on the purchase of a gun safe is the best decision one can make, if a gun collection extends beyond the meager limits of considerable size and value.Allowing room in a budget for a safe that has been approved by the Underwriters Laboratories may be the best choice.Having a safe that is non resistant to safe crackers and fire is nothing more than an obstacle to what can happen,or simply child proof.A very heavy safe is an important deterant to theft, adding bolts with counter sunk anchors through the floor helps to prevent it from tipping over.A thermal protecting seal helps to prevent heat and fire from entering the safe;a good fire resistance rating should protect the interior of up to 30 minutes in 1200 degrees of exterior heat. These are just a few of the important features to consider when looking at a safe.

Any suggestions for the best deals on safes? The biggest gun I have is a Mossberg 500 Riot Gun, so I really don't need long gun safe. I can put a lock through the action when needed. If the money is not much different from a smaller safe, I would spend the extra money though.

Safe prices are pretty steep, beginning at $800-$900. If you have a modest collection of guns worth around $1,000 or less, you might be more in the market for a locking steel cabinet. They can be double locked and bolted to the wall, but they offer very little to no protection from intense heat.

Even if you only have a few guns, you will fill a safe in due course. You can use it for your camera equipment, wife's jewelry, etc. A real fireproof/theftproof safe is a bargain considering the cost of replacement.
If you shoot more than one gun, get one bigger than you think you will need. That is the #1 rule. I personally don't like digital locks. Locksmiths say when they go out, it's a problem. The only other real craveat is to wait until you are settled before purchase. You don't want to have to move it to often.
I consider mine one of my best purchases. If anything, it has saved me money. Now I have to trade in a pistol to get another in the safe. I wouldn't do that before!
