Basically wondering what to use for the range and what to use for defense. I don't want to spend much for practice, but I don't want to risk damaging my gun with crappy bullets. I've seen a billion and one brands and it's all greek to me. Any advice?
Thanks in advance!

I would suggest you avoid Wolf and Blazer.

I have a Firestorm 380, which is essentially the same (same manufacturer) as the Bersa Thunder 380, which is essentially a copy of the Walther PPK/S. I found recommendations for Winchesters in the other section too. What about American Eagle by Federal? Those seem pretty affordable.

Federal American Eagle,Winchester USA,UMC,and PMC ammunition is good for practice. If you have a difficult time finding it,you can order it through the mail order Sportsmans Guide. www.sportsmansguide.com they also carry the magsafe 60 grain fragmenting bullet in the .380 Defender Cartridge,it has a muzzle velosity of 1,500 fps with 300 Ft. lbs. of energy for personnal defense.

Unfortunately for some reason I can't have ammo shipped to Los Angeles, so I'll have to go with what's in the stores. But there are a few shops here that seem to have some nice stuff like Turner's, where I got my gun. By the way, did I get a good deal at $311 out the door, including the fees, tax and safety test license? What do you think of the gun that I got, any opinions?

I've owned a Thunder .380 for a couple of years and found it to be totally reliable and, due to the blowback action and fixed barrel, to be very accurate for a short-barreled pistol. No failures to feed and I'm very pleased with it.
My only reservation is the .380 caliber itself. I have a SIG 239 now that is essentially the same size, though about 8 oz. heavier and a bit thicker, in .40 so I will most likely sell the .380 even though the Bersa is more comfortable to carry.
I my area, the best price new is $200, though I've seen them for as high as $225. I don't know how much you paid for the safety class, taxes, etc.

Ok, I just bought some CCI Blazers. They were $10/box, 50rounds/box. They aren't brass but some kind of alloy. I got 3 boxes, hope I didn't get scammed. I'll try them this weekend.
BTW, I paid about $240 for my gun, the rest was taxes fees and license. I noticed that it is cheaper elsewhere but in L.A. this was the best deal I could find. To have it sgipped here would have made up the difference in price.

About a year ago an acquaintance brought me a Sig 226 in .40 S&W that needed cleaning up,it had alot of shavings in the chamber that appeared to be of aluminum.I shoot only brass cased ammunition,I've had the CCI aluminum .44 magnum Cases swell so much in my double action S&W,that it almost took a hammer on the ejector rod to get the empties out.I have no trouble with the brass, and have no reason to change.I find the CCI aluminum cased cartridges do work good for filling up holster belt loops in a western holster because brass tarnishes.

Well, I bought some other kinds the other day. Fiocche (forgot how it was spelled), American Eagle, PCM, and Cor-Bon (for self defense only). They were all about $9-$10/box of 50.

Fusion,
I used to always buy whatever was cheapest. This tended to be Wolf ammo for my pistols and surplus military ammo for my rifles. However, after having a stuck case or two, I stick with brass. The CCI blazers with their gray case is aluminum, I think. Despite DA's problem with his double-action revolver, I have not had any real problems with them in my 9mm CZ-75b, I did, however, have some misfires when this ammo was used in my Armscor 1911, I first thought I had a bad batch, but found out that the firing pin spring is too stiff (thanks to CA gun laws) and doesn't smash the primer hard enough. A second hit with the hammer did the trick on all Blazers, but I never had that problem with the brass cased ammo. So far I've used American Eagle, Fiocchi, and Speer Lawman in that particular gun.
Happy shooting and welcome to the forum.
