after reading one of the threads in this forum, i decided to check my pistols manual to see what it said about +p ammo usage. it sounds like the manufacturer is trying to prevent me from suing them if something goes wrong, but it doesn't outright say not to use such loads. i would like to use the hotter loads for self defense and targeting (after looking at the prices from Georgia arms). My Taurus PT101 was designed for ".40s&w 180GR FMJ @ 985 fps” the manual uses this disclaimer.... “Plus-P’, “Plus-P-Plus” or other ultra or high velocity ammunition generates pressures significantly in excess of the pressures associated with standard ammunition. Such pressures may affect the useful life of the firearm or exceed the margin of safety built into many pistols and could therefore be DANGEROUS. does this mean that it would be bad to use +p ammo, or that Taurus is just doing some legal jumping in case some idiot reloads a .40 at 2000fps and his gun explodes.

Nasty;Doc and I were questioning the same thing regarding the use of the high energy .357 magnum "Deer Stopper" cartridge for the S&W 686.I called georgia arms,Doc called Smith & Wesson, and we both received approval from the manufacturer of the firearm,as well as the manufacturer of the ammunition.Whether the chamber can support the +P catridge is very important, with the Taurus,I would remain with the manufacturers guidlines for ammunition. The 40 S&W in +P requires a fully supported chamber, whether the Taurus measures up to the required strength to handle these hotter cartridges is unknown to me,but I seriously doubt it.With my pistols,if I want more velosity in the .40 S&W,I go with a lighter bullet.Georgia Arms has the G40A in the 165 gr.JHP,wich has 1050 fps / 404 ft.lbs.,and it is priced at $10. per 50 rds.For target, they has the 165 gr. FMJ (IPSC Major ) with 1050 fps/404 ft.lbs. priced at $8.50.There are several others, without going with the +P in the .40,which is a high pressure cartridge to begin with.G.A. also has a 155 gr. FMJ that will get 1100 fps/416 ft.lbs for $8.50 at 50 rds.

thanks for the help.
when you say a "fully supported chamber" do you mean the entire chamber area? would it need more then a better/stronger barrel? also, the for the above mentioned ammo, as long as i stay clear of the +p stuff from georgia arms i should be ok. i'll have to go and place an order for some of their other loads. thanks for the help.

The chamber area is what supports the case when under pressure, how the chamber surrounds the case,is how much it supports the case from rupture or swelling.Georgia Arms has much more to offer than just +P in handgun cartridges, look around their ammo and you will see many other options.I shoot alot of their .40 S&W and .357 sig cartridge in my 229,239,and 229 Sig Sport.
