I'm going to buy a 44 mag to carry as backup while bowhunting up in Idaho. I like the size and balance of the Taurus model 44 with a 4" ported barrel, but I would like to use it to hunt deer, hogs, cats, and maybe elk as well. The delimma, I think the 6" barrel is too big and awkward to carry, especially on horseback, but I don't think the 4" will take a scope without drilling and tapping (not something I want to do to a new handgun). My question is two part, first can a scope be mounted to a 4" barrel without drilling, and second is a 4" barrel sufficient to take down game cleanly, and accurately, I don't like tracking through the hills, Im lazy.

I'd go with a 6" as well. You'll get better muzzle velocity, less noise and better accuracy.

If you are more concerned with carryability and intend to do more carrying than shooting go with the 4". I used to have a 6" 629, I tried sholder holsters, belt holsters about any way to carry the thing. I loved the gun but it was a pain in the butt to carry. When I get another I will definitely get a 4". The 4" will carry fairly comfortable in a belt holster and not get in the way while bowhunting. As far as hunting deer and elk, etc, if you are getting close to bowhunt, then that 4" bbl will do just fine. Also, take a look at the different scope mounts, they used to make a clamp on type for the 629, but I'm not familiar with anything for your Taurus. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Acquire something with the .44 magnum and quit dreaming of the brazilian steel.
