I'm considering the purchase of a new Ruger P89 (9mm) for home defense. What do you think of this weapon? Should I get the manual safety version or decock?
I don't know much about it except for the fact it feels good in my hand, appears to be very sturdy and has decent reviews on this forum.
I've been very happy with other Rugers I own as well.
Thanks.

I own more Rugers products than any other brand of gun. But I own 0 Ruger p-89's etc. Ruger is very reliable, though I find their autos a bit rough. Either model, safety, decocker, or DAO means a lot of practice before I would be comfortable with it as a home defense gun. A shooting at home is going to be stressful, training, and the confidence it brings is the best way to reduce the level of stress. I recommend a Glock for defense.

I just wanted to say that i to like a glock for defencive applications,,,,, there definetly dependable,,, but i have to say that ruger will do the trick to, #1 ruger makes a absulutly reliable gun, they shoot every time you pull the triger, now i must say that i didnt like the p89, im just not much on 9mm ,,,,,, now the p90 or the p97 both of them are in 45 acp ,,, both good firearms, and the p94 in 40 cal great firearm,, ruger's allways shoot, and they last for ever,,,,, but just to set the record straight im no ruger nut,,,,,,, i like my 1911's and i love my glock's. but i have had my share of ruger's to, if you dont have much money to spend, a ruger is a great gun,,,,, if you have the money go get a glock, you can pick up ruger 9mm used for around $240.00 you cant beet the price, the glock used will be around $400.00 and up, and as for the ruger, i allways liked the decocker

Do your homework. There is a reason why you can go out and buy that particular piece for under $500. When it comes to Home defense, there is no subsitute for reliability. Period. You want what you have to work everytime.
I use to own a Ruger P90 (I think it was the 90). It was in the 45 ACP. Maybe it was the caliber, but this gun jammed all the time. On average about 1 for every 15 rounds fired. The trigger action (Trigger pull) was second rate. And compared to other, more reliable pistols, this one was very top heavy.
I myself carry a modified Colt 1911. But if you are into Double Action, then I would suggest the Glock (I have seen alot of these on the market used sell for $300 to $400 lately), Sig Sauer (very reliable, but i don't like the rear sight appature), H&K USP (If its good enough for the special forces then hey...), and then the Springfield XD (extreme duty).
I think that the springfield has the very latest in safety features (Check out the USA action), and has been tested reliable up to 5,000 rounds. It was even marketed to compete with other subcompact pistols on the market and I have seen one at a gun show sell for $300 to $400 as well.
Happy hunting.

Thanks for your insight. I don't want to get into a heavy caliber as I need my wife to be able to shoot it as well. I'll keep looking and may even go back to a revolver.
I've been in the Army since 1981 and am fairly comfortable with a 9mm Beretta. I'd like to get something without all the "safety" gadgets associated with the Army's M-9. That's why the P89 decock seemed so nice. My only "must have" in a handgun is absolute reliability.

I got a Ruger P95 and so far have been very pleased with it, in general. But I took a combat shooting course and found the Ruger to be a bit cumbersome for that kind of shooting. As a result I am purchasing a Glock 17. If your wife is to use this gun for self-defense, I would give the Ruger more thought.

I have a P89 special edition. It came with rubber grips, but only one clip. I paid $335 at a gun show a couple years ago. At the same show, I picked up 2 hi cap (17rd) mags for $20-25. Absolutly reliable. Never misfeeds or misfires. Dead on accurate. Recoil is manageable. Field stripping is easy.
