I have a stainless Colt .45, enhanced version, and want to have a beavertail grip safety installed on it. My question is which one should I get? The gunsmith I am having do the work has an excellent reputation and I'm sure can help direct me in this area but I would still like to hear from others that have had this done. Dubbleakshun, I am sure that you have some advice to offer on this subject so please chime in. This has been an absolutely flawless pistol with zero malfunctions to date and strictly from the box. I only shoot ball ammo through it as it is not part of my defensive arsenal so I don't plan on having any work done on it other than I am having a new trigger installed, primarily for aesthetic reasons. Thanks, Mike

Mike; The choice among many gunsmiths and shooters are the Ed Brown High Ride Grip Safeties. This safety places the web of the grip very high, but not so as to put your hand in the way of the slide's recoil.I talked with Jack Weigand at the '99 shot show in Atlanta, where he had with him a Colt Commander with an Ed Brown High Ride. You'll find many examples of it's application in Layne Simpson's 639 page book, called "The Custom Government Model Pistol".I have two full length Colts that I fitted with the Ed Browns and it does reduce felt recoil and provides much better accuracy from shot to shot, while increasing speed. There are two kinds, one with the Memory groove tab,and without, both are high rides.I prefer the memory groove tab to insure a more positve disengagement of the safety. They also look better than most others.

Thanks Dubbleakshun, I appreciate the input and will check out the Ed Brown beavertail. Mike
By the way it is a Commander version.

Mike; The commander is a good one because you don't have to replace the hammer. The grip safeties will only accept the rounded commander style hammers or those with very short spurs. The Ed Brown also has a hammer drop slot.Try this website,a gunsmith named C.T. Brian did a commander for the cover of a popular handgun magazine,he put his best foot forward on customizing a Colt Combat Commander, including an Ed Brown Beavertail. www.ctbrian.com
