hello all, i was wondering what you think is the best way to introduce children to firearms. I have a 2 month old daughter so obviously i wont be doing this anytime soon, but just for future reference. I just want to make sure the safety aspect of firearms is covered. If anything happened to my daughter I would never forgive myself. Thanks for the input!

I started my kids, 17 (son) and 19 (daughter) now, with the basic rules as soon as they could carry on a conversation, I think about 4-5 years old. (1. All guns are always loaded 2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you do not want to destroy 3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target 4. Be sure of your target and beyond.)
I bought them each a "Chipmunk" single shot rifle, ( I had bought a couple of antique Stevens Favorites, but became leery about them) and took them out to the high desert. I placed a half gallon milk carton filled with water about 15 feet away. I had them shoot the milk carton, using a Hollow Point, and they saw the destructive power of the firearm. They have both turned into good hunting partners, good luck.

a friend of mine gave his son a toy gun, and put a very long wooden dowel inside the muzzle of the gun. it helps to illustrate to his son where and what would be hit if the gun were to go off it really helped his muzzle discipline that kid is safer at 8 years old than many of my adult friends are good luck and thank you for carrying on the shooting tradition.

Please feel free to post this on your board if it helps illustrate gun safety to more people by all means.
