Going out to the country this weekend and plan to shoot off a few hundred rounds. I was thinking of taking some leftover targets I had and taping them to cardboard boxes and then put a rock inside or stake it to keep the box upright.
Anyone have some other suggestions on quick and easy setups for targets? I just hate it when they flutter in the wind. . .

Callahan;Carry some charcoal briquets;they're biodegradable and react on bullet impact.Carry a few stakes, stretch a string or wire, and hang some plastic spuons from clothes pins.Carry a couple of 2x4s and have a cutting contest with someone else to see who cuts the first 2x4 in half.Oh yeah, with the plastic spuons, try to hit them on the spin and cut the string once all the spuons are done, run the strig through the hole in the spring of the clothes pin,to keep it from twirling sideways.I carry Saw Horses and set up spinning paddles.Carry some Birch Wood Casey Shoot N C targets to stick on the box.Water filled 2 litre plastic soft drink containers or milk jugs reacts real good to the magnums.Balloons work good for long distance shooting. If you can carry a saw horse, they work good for hanging targets off cord or setting targets on top.I bore holes on top to hold dowels, which I tape clothes pins to hold small targets.

All real good ideas. I can see you are more free-spirited and fun-loving with your target shooting than I am. I guess I need to think more in that direction. You are also more demanding marksmanship-wise!

Callahan;Try shooting from the kneeling position also, this position is a favorite of mine for bearing down on those harder to hit targets.

DA: .40 caliber sure has a great effect on 2-liter soda bottles filled with water. Kind of a mess to clean up but a lot of fun. Must have fired 150 rounds in an hour at those targets and some surplus 100-yard rifle targets. Rifle targets were set up for zeroing and in 1-inch increments. Really good for target work, I thought. Got tired of loading magazines after a while...

We went through many gallon milk containers filled with water this past weekend. I like the balloons filled with helium too. (available at any party store) the wind whips them around and you can have two colors taped together making one friend and one foe. I also like paladin targets for combat type shooting. D/A, the 2x4 game sounds fun. Blackdog and I will be trying it on our next cabin trip. Doc

We couldn't find any scrap lumber and was too cheap to "waste" an uncut length of 2x4! That idea might also be interesting on 4x4 posts!

Callahan; The 4x4 posts are more expensive but work better with rifles and magnum cartridges.I make swinging paddles using scrap 1x2 and wood screw a scrap piece of 1" ,six inch wide fence board to it.When you destroy the paddle the 1x2 takes off swinging, then you catch it while it spins.I run a long piece of bailing wire and separate each paddle hook with some scrap plastic plumbing PVC pipe. The paddles will put up a better fight to survive if you stick a Shoot N C target to it.The .40 will work good for this shooting gallery of sorts.I also hang bowling pins from a wire underneath a saw horse. You can get used pins by the hundreds from any Bowling Alley, just ask.

Old Real Estate sign frames work well. Talk to one of your local agents. If they get bent they may not be able to hold their signs but work very well to tape cardboard and targets to. The are light, realatively compact and are made to stick right in the ground.
If you are handy with a welder you can make them for next to nothing out of scrap.

5D3: That's a good idea, plus the new home builders in my area put up all sorts of signs for the weekend to draw buyers' attention. They are supposed to take them down Sunday night, but that often does not happen. I figure they are fair game, too.
The part I like about your real estate sign idea is it can be left up for a length of time.

possibly one of the funiest things i have shot at are bricks it almost looks like and explosion when you get a good hit. The bricks are generally reduced to a fine powder. The guys doing the brick work at the house we just finished building gave me over 500 bricks to shoot at and a whole pickup load of broken/ half bricks. I really want to try the 2x4 idiea or since i have an endless supply of scrap lumber maybe even 2x12!...

Oneshot; Those 2x12s would work great if you cut them in squares, hang them on short pieces of 2x4,use the U-shaped fencing nails to hang them on a stranded wire cable(put springs on each end on the cable anchors) and shoot the 2x12 paddles. When you hit one the first time it starts swinging and bouncing from the tension of the wire cable.

Another really fun, but not too cheap idea. Cans of hair spray with a burning rag nearby. Just make sure you clear away any dry grass first.

I saw a guy on a shooting show that went through a family owned watermelon patch shooting melons with his .44 magnum and 12 gauge pump shotgun.

Did you ever check out the video on Magnum Research's site? It's called "Shattermelons." Pretty weird... www.magnumresearch.com/
