I like to use the little spongy protectors while shooting because I find them light and comfortable. The large headphone-style are, to me, uncomfortable and get sweaty in warm weather. Does anybody know if it makes a significant difference which one you use as far as protecting your hearing?

I like the little yellow sponge ones too. When I shoot really really hot Magnum loads ( 44 and up) then I use Peltor Cup type on top of the little ear plugs and I always feel really bad when the people around me aren't prepared for that. he he ;D

I've been shooting smaller caliber rifles, so the little yellow spongy things had been working fine. Recently switched to the headphone type while in the company of those .40's & 357 mags...

I use the yellow ear plugs and the muffs;shooting .44 magnums indoors with block walls gives me one big migrane without the combo.Wilson sent me three pair of Peltors for some questionaires that I filled out,I had two sets of Silencio muffs already. With rifle I only use the plugs because the muffs get in my way.

I had never tried both, but that's a very good idea, especially when zeroing in before hunting season and everyone is firing large-caliber rifles. Never fails that if you lift the ear cup to hear somebody, somebody else will just then cap off a round. Wth the spongy protector on underneath it wouldn't be so bad.

Has anyone tried those electronic ear protection gadgets that let conversation pass and block loud noises? Sounds like it would be terrific at the range (until the battery dies )

I'd probably spend all that money on them and leave them at home...

I just went through all my old shooting stuff and found a set of Bilsom Impact electronic headset type ear muffs. The battery is dead but I am going to put a new one in and see if they work. I had completely forgotten that I even had those - I guess that's a side effect when you have too much stuff.

I already replaced the battery. Tried normal conversation and that works great so far. I plan on going shooting on Thursday if everything goes like planned. I guess I will post an update right after that.

OK - here it is - range report for BILSOM Impact Model 2390. They wear pretty comfortably, although they are a little heavier than the standard ones. They also do not fold for transportation like the others I have, and therefore do not fit into my gun case. With the microphone turned off the sound suppression seems to be at the same level at my standard ear muffs. I still used the little yellow spongy ear plugs underneath them when shooting hot loaded 44s and 357s. I really like the microphone function. Just a little turn switch on the right side, which also acts as a volume control. You can have almost "normal" conversation with the ear protectors on. They only suppress very loud sounds. I was able to hear the ricochet of some bullets from the backstop 200 yards away. I thought that was pretty cool. I also like the looks of them - they are black and have a very "tactical" look. I'm glad for that thread - I had them for such a long time and had actually forgotten that I had them. PS: I just noticed I have over 200 posts - Isn't it supposed to say "senior member"?

Hogrider:
Not sure, but as I recall it was 250 posts.
About how much would a pair of those Bilsom protectors cost? Do you recall?
Guess I could just check on the web...thanks for the report.

Callahan, honestly I do not remember because they are about ten years old and I think I bought them on sale at a sporting goods store that went out of business. I found one set on Ebay: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3626527216&category=36258But those are not the ones I have and look completely different - not just the color. Here is another one, which looks rather cool but boy that price is ridiculous: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3626108418&category=383I searched through Google for quite a while, but couldn't find anything even close to the model I have, so I assume it's long out of production. I know for sure that they were a lot cheaper than those prices I can see now. Must have been somewhere in the 70 to 80 Dollar price range, because I know i would have not bought them for 130.
