Do they serve any purpose? I can imagine perhaps for quick aiming at night, but apart from that are they just novelty?

A friend of mine has a light/laser combo on his Glock 21. I tried it once at an Indoor Shooting Range but wasn't too impressed with it. On the other hand I can absolutely see the purpose of it in a dark house in a self defense situation.

I don't think that they would be useful even then. Try navigating your house late at night with a laser pointer. They don't work quite like a flashlight.
I'd think that it would be more of a beacon. "Here I am!" It certainly would draw attention in a dark room.
