Hey girl; That might be a .357 magnum, which also shoots 38 Special, not the other way around. The .357 magnum case is longer, which will provide deeper bullet penetration at higher velosities. Your boy friend might not think you can handle the more powerful thrust of the magnum; so he probably recommended the 38 special. Most Ladies are jumping on the semi-autos with the .40 S&W or 9mm; We have plenty of these, and others, in our galleries; Your welcomed to visit if you like: groups.msn.com/HANDGUNS

Dear Girl,
This really should be called your first gun. First let me say that is always nice when women join the shooting sports. My missus wasn't even into guns until she got w/ me, but now she is just as avid a shooter as I am.
Since it sounds like your boyfriends gun was a revolver, you should probably stick w/ that same technology until you get comfortable as a gunowner.
There are dozens of gun makers who manufacture good wheelguns. My personal favorite based on looks, performance, cost and feel is Taurus. They make a good product and they aren't super expensive.
Now you didn't tell us if you want the gun to be a good concealed carry gun or a good home defense pistol.
I you carry concealed, I would suggest the 850 CIA in .38 Special or the 650 CIA in .357 Magnum. The CIA models are small 5 shot revolvers that will fit well in a purse, coat pocket, ankle holster, or in a good belt holster. They have a concealed hammer so they smoothly from out of a pocker or even a small handbag.
If you want a housegun or a good eaasy shooter to take to the range, I would suggest the Taurus Tracker in .357 Magnum. The Tracker is light, has a nice set of comfortable grips, holds 7 rounds of ammo, allows the versatility of using .357 or .38 Special and is very reasonably priced {usually $350- $400}.
If you has a good friend who is a shooter and who has a lot of guns ask him or her to take you shooting and let you try bunch of different weapons. That will make your decision easier.

My wife loves her Ruger SP101. It's a small 5-shot .357 magnum. Automatics are cool, but require a little practice.
By the way, we appreciate your boyfriend's service to the Country.
