Hi I am a new handgun user and enthusiast.
I just recently purchased my first 1911, a Springfield Mil-Spec. I have only fed 200 rounds through it so far and have not had any jams. However, after the first cleaning, when i took it back to the range the gun would not load the first bullet. I went to the range master and he lubed it up some, saying it was too dry and immeadiately it started firing again. I suspect the problem may have been that i didnt seat the mag all the way, but i cant be sure.
Another thing i noticed is, during the last 50 rounds the gun began to eject the spent shells directly backward into my face and head. Not every round but say about 3 in the last 50. Is this just some randomness that is to be expected? Because hot shells to the forehead and eyeware is not my idea of a good time.

Slade; I can put as much as 500 rds through a 1911 with no problems like you mention. I do things to my pistols that might prevent these thinks from occuring. When I lube a 1911, I apply Wilson's Ultimalube Grease, but others will work, using the syringe applicator on the inner rails of the slide and frame, but only a small bead, wiping the excess of after a few racks of the slide. I also apply a small amount on the inside of the barrel bushing and barrel, and smear it very thin over the surface. Another area is the barrel link, being careful not to get any grease on the ramp. You want to keep any oil or grease out of the chamber area, feed ramp, and magazine chute. Before I insert the slide stop I apply a small amount of grease to the pin. I also apply a thin coat of this grease is the upper locking lugs of the slide. This will keep your pistol functioning smoothly; metal to metal friction should have a lubricant between the moving contact surfaces. Click Here For More
