My son and I want to purchase a handgun and spend some time at the range together. Can anyone recommend a gun you think will give us the best initial experience? We're avid paintballers and need something to do on those days I'm letting my welts heal. Thanks for your advice!

I suggest that you start off with a dirty harry .44 ...you know a good beginners gun.

Duckhunter, I would suggest a revolver and a safety course for guys new to handguns. Maybe a Smith and Wesson .38 special or .357 magnum. Another good choice would be Ruger's GP100 in .357 magnum. The nice thing about a .357 magnum is you can shoot the less expensive .38 special rounds in them and also have the choice of using the .357 magnum rounds for defense. In the semi-auto category, there are many, many options. Come and see us at the Gungroup Forum: gungroup.proboards3.com/index.cgiThere is more going on there than here.

Duckhunter, If you're looking for a handgun just for the range, I'd suggest a .22 cal revolver or semi-auto to start. The recoil is almost non-existant, ammo is cheap, and the paper doesn't know the difference Take a look at either the forum TA noted above, or the handgun forum I've noted below (maybe both...)

both of these guys gave you good advice, if you dont really care about big bangs and big holes just get a 22 revolver take a safety course and you and you son can go to the range and shoot a brick of 500 rounds for under 15 bucks. the 38 or 357 will give you a bigger punch but be more expensive to shoot. have fun with whatever you decide to get.

A 22 is definately the way to go. For pure fun that's in-expensive they can't be beat. Later on you can do like the rest of us and buy more pistols in different calibers.
