I'm going to ask before I buy. I'm looking for my first revolver. I'm interested in a .38 caliber with a 5" or 6" barrel. I would like it for home defense and target shooting. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Get a Model 19.
It will shoot both 357 magnum and 38 Special.

A four inch S&W 686 will be much easier to holster and have around the home, the six inch will give the perb two more inches of grabbing your gun. The L-Frame of the 686 will provide more strength for the .357 magnums, allowing you to also start off with the lighter recoil of the 38 specials. Most defensive handguns, whether revolver or pistol, have shorter barrels for ease of deployment, carry, and work in closer quarters. The four inch is well balanced in a combat revolver and the preferred duty length by most law enforcement. I've found new condition, pre-owned, L-Frames for around $300. to $400 dollars.

The 19 will have better balance, and will be plenty strong for a diet of mostly 38's, but still allow you to shoot magnums when needed.
The 686 is heavier, and has a full underlug barrel, which is ugly in some people's opinions.

Some of us just like these style barrels a little better. They both have holes right down the center of them! ...and some of the full lug models have those UGLY laser etched logos on the barrels. Cheesy choice on S&W's part. Real rollmarks got to be too hard for them, I guess.

The MIM guns make that awful "clank" sound when you dry fire them.
