I am looking to buy my first pistol and I am having a hard time deciding whether to buy a 9mm or a .40 S&W. I having been looking at several pistol makers and the two calibers are the same price and about the same size. What are some of the advantages of both and overall which one would be the best choice?

Rooster; With the capacity ban having sunsetted, the 9mm will have a four to five round capacity edge on the .40 S&W. As far as stopping power in a cartridge, many feel the larger .40 S&W, with it's high velosities, far outweigh the capacity issue regarding the 9mm. Take special note that with some .40 S&Ws, a .357 sig conversion is available by simply changing out compatible barrels. Follow the Link to our Handgun Forum for more: groups.msn.com/HANDGUNS

Rooster; The option of converting from the .40 S&W to the 357 sig is one worthy consideration. For some, however, the thin walled case of the .40 S&W and it's higher pressures seems to be a concern for some pistols without fully supported barrel chambers. I've been shooting the .40 S&W and 357 sig in the fully supported chambers of those barrels of the Sig Sauers, and have not noticed any case bulging from my extracted cases. I've even shot alot of factory reloaded .40 S&W without signs of case bulging. It all depends on the ammunition and handgun used.

Remember:
Whocares is the all out "in your face"kinda guy.
Doubleaction is the reserved, mild mannered GUN EXPERT who was done wrong by RogerC
I hope this helps.

Im sorry to many people on this board want to complain instead of help. the caliber issue is kind of a moot point these days it there are so many good ammunitions out there that you can get the job done with either. The 9mm will be a little more mild mannered ( less recoil) than the .40 and you will be able to stuff more rounds into the magazines. also ammo will be cheaper for the 9mm so if you are just going to use it for punching holes in paper at the range by all means get a 9mm. i have carried both calibers and they are both great i currently am carrying a P229 in .40 and i love it. the .40 will pack more of a punch and deliver a little more velocity and punch. if you are going to carry the gun i would reccomend the .40. but it is all perosnal preference i would suggest that you go to a range that rents guns and shoot both and find which one you like better and what you can shoot well. try the Berretta 92 and 96 and also the Sig P226 P228 (9mm) P229(.40) the glock 17, 19, 26 (9mm) 22, 23, 27 (.40) good luck with your first gun, and please take a safety course.
