Long ago I split with the NRA on their position on assault weapons. Frankly, I couldn't see any reason for a private citizen owning an assault weapon.
I have no problem with the 10-round limitation on magazine capacity, though I would not oppose lifting that restriction.
Here's the point: What I'm wanting is someone to give me a good reason for "biting the bullet" and joining the NRA. I'm sure there's someone out there who can give me some logical arguments and convince me to give up my objections. Maybe I just don't have enough information or the correct information.

Callahan, I'm going to give you my opinion. You know the old "never discuss politics, sports, or religion" thing, but here goes nothing. I joined the NRA mainly to be part of the larger "voice" of gun owners out there and wanted someone to lobby for MY rights, and those of my fellow gun owners. I certainly understand you not agreeing with all the NRA does.... sometimes I'm less than thrilled with them ,too.. but I try to look at the "big picture" so to speak. You mention the assault weapons, and I do understand your point of view... and here is my take. My analogy is this: I am not a hunter. Never had the urge to do it. Don't like the taste of wild game, and just don't like shooting "unarmed" animals. < Guess I'm a Bambi-lover at heart. Hehehe> Would restrictions on hunting affect me? No, because it doesn't directly impact me.... but I STILL want to defend their rights, as part of the grand scheme. I'm always afraid that one concession soon leads to more, and then we'll all be limited to single-shot, antique weapons or some such crap. Therefore, to me, assault weapons are just the beginning of a grander scheme to disarm the public.....Maybe I'm a little paranoid, not sure. I don't know that what I've said here helps or hurts, but we are all gun brethren, and think that if we at least have strong member support, it will help voice our cause. Does one member matter? YES. Just like politics, every ONE counts. K... off my soapbox. No disrespect intended here, so please don't take any. I think we're all on the same page. MiKeMaN

No offense taken (with the exception of the "unarmed animals" remark), Cnemikeman. I may be swayed a bit by your arguments. Anybody else?

Without Organizations like the N.R.A.,The Shooting Sports Foundation, and many more, the gun enthusiast would be represented only as steriotypical images portrayed by the media and hollywood.Without any of these groups, gunownership rights would have probably diminished many years ago.N.R.A. membership is a calculating facter in the political arena of vote counting. Many new conditions exist that did not exist prior to the Clinton administration, and many blame the NRA for letting it happen. The assault weapons,10 round magazine capacity, and Brady Bill is only the tip of the iceberg.

The NRA is more than a gun enthusiast organization. It is the oldest civil rights organization in America, standing up for the freedoms guaranteed to us as Americans, but needing to be defended in every generation. The NRA is who will stand up for all of our freedoms, including the most basic freedom, the 2nd Amendment. Without the 2nd amendment, the other "rights" in the Bill of Rights could be taken away by tyrants, or worse, bureacrats. Being part of the NRA is a way to stand up for freedom. Who else will stand up to Hilary Clinton, Charles Schumer and the others in our Congress who seek to disarm us? As one citizen I can't make a real impact on our political process, but as part of the NRA I can make a real difference. I want my sons, and my grandsons to have the right to bear arms as free men in this land of the free, and I truly believe the NRA will stand up with me for these rights. Vito

Callahan,
Here is why it important to join the NRA...
"In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me - and by that time no one was left to speak up."
Support all our rights, even the ones you may not agree with!

They are one of the very few, if not the only, to have taken on Clinton & Gore and throughly whipped their butts. If for no other reason, and there are many, that's good enough for me.

The names Feinstein,Schumer,Clinton,& Brady should be enough reason to join every gun loving organization you find! I can't believe a couple of them are still in office!
