Another member asked what organizations besides the NRA might he join to support 2nd amendment rights. There are a few but here is another way we may all want to consider...
1. Vote (these are the people who make the laws, not just lobby for them) 2. Introduce new people into the shooting world (there is strength in numbers) 3. Exercise as many of your current rights as possible (i.e. get a concealed permit) 4. Be responsible about your sport (i.e. safe storage of firearms, ask before shooting on private land) 5. Organize a clean up of your local outdoor shooting spot and advertise it by posting flyers or better yet contact the local news. Many outdoor shooting holes are littered with old appliances, TVs, tires, broken bottles and cans, as well as many expended casings and plastic shotgun shells. Since many shooters own trucks and vehicles which can be used to carry out this garbage you can have a bar-b-que, shoot and then clean up. It is not bad with several people working together and it makes the shooting area nicer for all of us and makes us look great to the general public.

Those are all good suggestions. Hunting is becoming a dying sport because of lack of involvement by "new blood" and I can see that happening to the gun ownership folks, with handguns being first on the list.
PS -- TO ALL: PLEASE REFER TO MY NRA POST (DILEMMA) ON LEGAL ISSUES FORUM...

5Delta3,
Thanks for bringing topic here, too. I was hesitant to post in both places, but think it's a worthwhile topic. There is also a discussion started on NRA membership in legal issues, as well. Take care, and safe shootin'!!

I thought is was worth bringing up in both forums.
We take so much heat for embracing a sport involving tools that can be misused (even though all tools can be misused, my father seemed incapable of using a power tool unless he was three sheets to the wind. Thankfully he was never hurt but it made for some interesting home improvement projects but that is another story...)
We are condemed for the death of innocent people, toxic lead buildup in wetland areas, supporting "death merchants", and the extinction of entire species of animals. Truely it makes me seeth inside. But I figure the least we can do is to clean up our messes, even if it means I take out a handful or two more garbage than I bring and it takes me a year to do it. It still gets done and really is not that big of an efforts. The pay off is much higher as property owners are much more likely to allow shooting on private land if we don't treat it like some personal dumping ground.
I know I'd be furious if someone dumped their old TV and fridge on my front lawn.

Actually,
I'd be happier with fewer numbers if the membership included far more responsible people.
Too often at the range I've seen people who
1. Are inconsiderate of their fellow shooters 2. Talk trash to other shooters who aren't as skilled 3. Shoot their guns "gangsta" style, you know, that sideways nonsense 4. Leave trash behind.

Not so sure about the fewer numbers but a little common sense and courtesy sure would go a long way.
A prime example of one person being capable of making us all look bad was the abusive and ignorant s.o.b. who almost single handedly decimated this forum recently. It is only now after the owner Mike, got involved and changed the posting rules that we are experiencing a revival.
Many thanks to Mike and all the members who also emailed him and made him aware of the situation.
