I don't keep up much on Canadian gun rights and the Canadians that I work with do not either, but I never turn a deaf ear when a country lets their rights be flushed down the drain. These couragous Canadians are taking a monumental and historic stand to preserve their rights, and that is the Grandest Display of unity that I've witnessed in a long time.

What about the opposition of those who are making a stand against the mandatory registration? How are they reacting to this?

People opposing the registry don't seem to be having much of an effect. Our Liberal government is staunch in its determination to continue with the registry, claiming "it will make Canadian society a safer place." Maybe..... if the violent criminals would register their illegal firearms!!!!!! (which of course they don't). The fact is, the vast majority of people impacted by the registry are law-abiding responsible gun owners. But, now, the registry is creating new forms of "crime," since many people are refusing to register, and are therefore technically in possession of illegal firearms. Here's a poll reflecting the sentiments of people living in my home city (Lethbridge, Alberta): www.lethbridgelife.com/pollresults.cfm?QID=57The whole thing is just frigging big expensive mess

I am not sure how many Canadians are on the boards here, and I am not sure if our American friends are particularly interested in the situation here, but here is another news story about the gun registry....... it is causing division even within the Liberal party (the party largely responsible for implementing the registry). FYI, the Canadian Liberal party is very similar to the Democratic party in the USA www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030326.wgun0326/BNStory/National/?query=registry

I'm a longtime hockey fan so I get a bit more drift about Canadian society. I'm sorry, but my outsider observation is that it seems the images of "mainstream" Canadian society have become so matter-of-factly, intently fem-PC it's sickening. The modest Canadian cultural outflow (TV, comics, films, etc.) that reaches here is so mushheaded, namby-pamby, Kumbaya, we're all correct socialist brothers & sisters - that I want to gag. It's like socialist "Barney" for adults. I live in the People's Socialist Republic of Taxachusetts, and even our media dreck isn't quite as presumptuous in its Orwellian self-righteousness as yours! You good "regular" Canadians have my empathy, friend. I would refuse to comply and defy any oppressive, unrepresentative, and unresponsive authority like that. It's not a government anymore, but an elitist oligarchy. We're getting pretty damn close to that here, as well.

Our ranch is just 4 miles north of the US/Canadian border, right along the east side of Waterton Park. Nobody around for miles, Our own private property for miles, yet I am not allowed to shoot my handgun on my own property. In fact, I can't even take the trigger lock off legally unless I am in my home or at the range. That to me is just not right.

That is just so ridiculous.
It looks like the day will come, sooner rather than later, that Canadian authorities will do a "voluntary" turn in campaign on handguns. That will be followed by outlawing handguns and outright confiscation. They will come to your door and take your guns. If you refuse they will take your guns and put you in jail. This seems to be a disease among liberal governments.
You have a whole lot of folks to vote out of office, but first you have to find some candidates who feel the way you and other gun owners do.
We have, in effect, a registry in this country since you have to go through a federal background check unless you buy the firearm from an individual. The FBI certainly knows who buys guns, though they may not know the type of gun. I'm not sure on that but I'm sure someone else on the forum does.
The only thing that saves us in this country is the fact that every once in awhile we get a conservative, freedom-respecting government in office that disrupts the liberal agenda. I suspect Canada has had an unbroken string of liberal governments. Loss of freedom of will is the price of those social programs though folks don't seem to understand or care.

If Shitt does indeed flow downstream,it would be a good idea to keep a close ear to the wall on Canada.

There is a person at the local range who has a particular handgun which the Canadian Government has decided should be prohibited. He has owned it for over 7 years. They have told him he must deactivate it or sell it to someone outside of the country. It has already begun. Thank goodness he is fighting it.

He needs your help of that of others. A petition might be a good way to start. Once the politicians see which way the crowd is moving they will run to get out front...
