hello all, im new to the forum. I was wondering how old one has to be in georgia to possess a handgun. I just moved here and I dont konw a lot of the laws. I know you have to be 21 to apply for a permit, but i cant find any info on simply owning and possessing. If I can own one, what restrictions do I have as far as carrying it? In my car? house? etc... I know that it would not be legal to conceal it without a permit, but Im hoping that at 19 I can at least own one. I live in a not-so-good part of town with with my girlfriend, who is home alone at night (she is planning to get a handgun as well) when Im at work, and my personal protection dog who usually stays with me. I know I may only be 19, but that shouldnt mean that I don't have the right to protect my home, myself and my family. Thanks guys.

Jake; The Age in Ga. to purchase a handgun is 21.I don't ask that you to take my word for it,but I do ask that you go to a reputable dealer and ask for their input. What part of Georgia do you reside?,if you don't mind me asking.

Gwinnett County has been the fastest growning areas in the state during the past twenty years, and it has attracted more than a fair share of ethic groups from all over the world,as far east as Indochina.

Get a 12 gauge pump and keep it handy. Works in the worst sections of N.Y.C.

I second flipper. If you're not going to be carrying it and just need to protect your home, get a cannon if you can point it.
Not being a criminal myself I can't say definively, but I'd say if I was and was breaking into a house to commit some mischief and heard a pump action I'd make tracks pretty quick, you might never need to fire the thing.
Not much fun at the range, but you can't beat them from a utilitarian standpoint.

I have to admit when I was 17 and living in North Cobb County, and Southern Cherokee,I carried a .25 caliber semi-auto for protection.I worked nights off the Interstate I-75 split of the four lane hiway, after one robbery,it was time to get something in my pocket. Most areas were very deserted and dark at night where gangs would often ride looking to prey on something.I do not tolerate people who intrude upon my right to exist.

You're not alone there, DA.
I have a good friend that's been carrying a loaded .38 since he was 16 and working at a circle-K in a bad part of town. He had to pull it once when he was still 17 to scare a guy off, and when the cops got there they decided not to mention the minor with a concealed gun.
The simple fact is that all laws are not rational, especially not in all situations, and while I'm vehemently against depriving anyone of their rights without cause, there are few who won't break a law that they deem is unreasonable. If guns were outlawed would I still have a gun? Absolutely. I'd be more inclined because I know that violent crime would go up. I'd just watch my words and actions around law enforcement a lot more.
Bear in mind I'm not advocating illegal activity by any person; simply stating that a law without reason is a violation of governmental authority, defying the very reason for government to exist, as stated by Locke and Rousseau.
