ok now I just read Packing.org on the CCW laws in my state, please translate it....
Open carry of handguns is legal except in certain areas (see restrictions), some municipalities, and in your vehicle. However, open carry is not common, and most likely you will be hassled, (try carrying openly in Detroit). Also, as soon as you get to your car you have to meet the other requirements (unloaded, etc.) It is a real hassle to openly carry in Michigan.
No license is needed to carry a pistol as long as it is exposed. However, should a person cover the pistol during inclement weather with a jacket or coat or get into a vehicle, the pistol would be concealed, and the carrier would place himself in jeopardy unless he possessed a concealed pistol permit. Per Attorney General's opinion #3158, a holster, in plain view, is not considered concealed.
so, pretty much, I could have a Desert Eagle .50AE on a leg holster, and as long as I follow general CCW Guidelines, and non CCW guidelines for vehicles, I should be ok??? Something seems wrong, has anyone heard of seeing somebody in their state openly carry with their handgun in plain view???

Open carry laws are more common than you think. I see probably one or two people a day carrying a pistol openly in arizona.
But the trick is that you WILL get hassled. While it's not illegal, it is frowned upon by all the paranoid who think that guns are bad and that having one will instantly result in the death of all who see it.
You're much better off getting a CCW, especially in a place like Michigan

Open carry is legal in Ohio also, but as Jeffly said, it is not very common because of the hassle factor. Too many anti-gun types and cops alike are not aware of the State laws that make it legal. You're likely to get your face shoved in the dirt with a knee on your neck. Not my idea of fun.

Years Ago I pondered the thoughts of an open carry society where everyone one oooo and ahhhh at a person's rig.Couldn't you see it now, "Hey Mommy,Check Out The Les Baer That Man Has",or while your checking out at the supermarket, the bag boy compliments you on your Galco Trailboss Holster and your Nickel Plated Colt Single Action Army .45 with the Aged Elephant Ivory custom fitted Grips. That would be one heckuva town to live in. I'm already teaching my three year and four year old grandsons the correct nomenclature of the components and controls to their toy M-16s and toy replica 1911A1s. It's moments like these that I'm proud to be an American ;D

First of CCW means concealed carry weapon. What your law allows is not concealed handguns. You have to have your firearm visible, which is a terrible travesty. First of all everyone knows you have a gun, which defeats trhe purpose of carrying a handgun. If a criminal sees you have a gun, he will shoot you first before he shoots anyone else. Why carry a handgun if you can't conceal it? The state governments are so screwed up its almost beyond belief. I am currently getting my criminal justice degree so I can become a federal agent, but if I wasn't going to be a federal officer, I would make sure that the state that I loved in wasn't "anti-gun" like so many are now. I guess for now, I will just stick with Indiana, which is still sane.

The last thing you want to do in any State is open carry. All you'll do is attract a whole lot of unwanted attention and hassle.

A common fact of life is that guns make people nervous. We just have to deal with it.
Plus, if the BG sees you with a gun and wants the gun, your surprise factor is gone and your chances of surviving a confrontation just tanked.
Get the license and get good at concealing.
