My boss and I were discussing CCW permits the other day. Don't get me wrong, I own lots firearms, shoot frequently and am in the Army Reserves, but I do not want a CCW. Here's why:
1. A handgun is too easy to steal from my parked car.
2. I don't feel the need to carry everywhere I go and live in a relatively low-crime area. It would pose a huge inconvenience to carry. Want to wear shorts, t-shirts and sandals on a hot Summer day? Not with a CCW!
3. Looking back at several physical altercations I've been in during my adult life (all involving drunk idiots), I was able to quickly diffuse the situation. In one incident, I easily neutralized the attacker without the need for a handgun. In this case, a handgun would have just gotten in the way.
4. Potential hassles with police.
5. There are lots of things you can carry with you or in your car that are not really weapons, but can be used as such. And none of them will get you in trouble with the cops.
6. Here in Michigan, it would cost me a total of $250.00, a weekend of silly classes, plus several trips to the Sheriff's department.
Now if I were the owner of a late-hours liquor store in a big city like Detroit, you're darned right I'd have one...but here in peaceful West Michigan: forget it. Not worth the hassle.
What are your thoughts?

You have some very valid points. I too live in a rural type, low crime area. My wife asks me why I need to carry in a relatively safe area. I tell her that if everybody with a CCW permit thought the same way she did, there would be no deterent to crime because there wouldn't any more armed Citizens than there were before. Just doin' my duty.
Anyway, this board had a meltdown a few months back and has been pretty dead since then. Stop by here.http://gungroup.proboards3.com/index.cgi
We would be glad to have you.

Good to hear a differing opinion. I think having the option (even if I often decice not to carry) is better than not being able to. I think that is the primary reason that I decided to apply for a concealed handgun licence.
BTW, TA is right. This place is a ghost town. Take a look at the Gungroup site and the Handgun site below.

Having the license doesn't mean you have to carry but that you legally can.
Get the silly thing and join the club.
