Hi there, this is my first post in this forum. it looks like a mature place, and i can't wait to hear from some of these 'experts'. i recently bought a new .40 taurus handgun, and i have found out that they sell 99% pure copper Hex hollow points. i was wondering what the advantages were (if any) to this ammunition. i also read somewhere that it was cleaner for your gun, but again, i am not an expert....yet

Nastybutler;Welcome to the forum,I'm not one of the experts here but on occaissions I try to get in the mix of things.I'm not familiar with the ammunition that you mentioned, the weight of the bullets,or the velosity ratings.I have many cartidges for the .40 including Corbon,Federal,Winchester,Speer Gold Dot,and a few others.I usually buy what I have trusted in over the years, and due to the cost of many other new cartridges,it's difficult to maintain a steady pace with the new developments.

I was reluctant to comment on anything regarding the lead free content until I read something about the bullet.Barnes has been around the copper jacketed bullets for a very long time, the Barnes X-Bullet is a solid copper bullet that has been around since 1989,but from what I've read,it has mostly applied to the game hunting industry. As the bullet expands during penetration it has the appearance of four petals, which gives it the name;it's known for deep penetration and claims by Barnes to have a reputation for delivering quick one shot kills on a wide variety of game.

thanks for all of your help. one more question though. you say it is used mostly for game. would this round be good for self-defense? or would a jury hate me for using this kind of "one shot kill" bullet.

Nasty butler; It seems that Barnes applied the same technology in developing the Taurus bulllet that was already present with the Barnes X-Bullet.The Expansion of the X-Bullet gives four separate razor edged pedals, where the Hex bullet developes a hex pattern spred. Most all defensive bullets will display expansion characteristics after being extracted from a wound, how it looks to use one in a defensive pistol, from a noted manufacturer of hunting bullets, known for one stop shots in game animals, is something a jury will most likely deliberate on,without question,if it gets that far.I make a rule as to not go off the beaten path in aquiring defensive ammunition.

nastybutler, I like the look of the taurus/ barnes ammo. I have used them hunting in shotguns, and have serveral friends that swear by that type of bullet for hunting. From what i see they only make the pistol round in .45 acp. But a few months ago they listed on the web site that the .40 s&w, 9mm and .357 magnum as under devoplment. But now nothing is said about any thing but the .45 acp. I have always wanted a .45, and really like the taurus round and believe that if you have to shot some one, and that that level of force was really called for, them you should never have to explain it in court. I guess it boils down to the weapon will not come out untill my life or the life of an other is really at risk. And then i want the best most effective round i can get. After looking at the tests and knowing what i have seen with the hunting ammo. Now i have a reason to buy a new SIG P220st and some ammo. Also check out www.ammolab.com they have some tests you can look at.

if we were "experts" we wouldnt be online asking questions, so I don't think any of us in this forum are "experts" but we all have some valuable information to bring to the table, and I would like to put my two cents in....... The Taurus rounds are my favorite defense rounds. There is a great article in American Handgunner that does field tests on, I want to say 5, different defense rounds. The Taurus round exceeded by far in all of the mediums that were used. Full expansion is always present, and penetration is great. I would highly recommend these rounds, and if you don't use them, stay away from Federal Hydra-Shoks!!!!! That is just my opinion from experience.

thanks again for all of the responses. why should i stay away from hydro-shock ammo? and would it be different using Hex ammo rather than other defensive ammo in court? i see some conflicting views on that

Nastybutler; As I stated to you earlier,I'm not one of the experts on this forum;we will just have to be patient enough until someone answers your call on this sensitive issue, which may require a professional opinion. ;D

I didn't know that they were making that round for 40S&W already. I've shot the 45ACP with impressive results. Also here is a link to some ballistics tests that have been performed on the Taurus Copper Hex 45ACP. It's not 40S&W, but it might help you out some. www.ammolab.com/taurus_copper.htm
