What is your preferred barrel length on double action .357 magnum revolvers?

Ever since shooting a 4" Colt Python;which I couldn't get enough of,I felt that a four inch in .357 magnum balances quite well for shooting. It carries better too with the right holsters than the six inchers.I've been very sucessful in carrying my mid frame 4 inch revolvers in a concealed manner with no problems at all,and with the right set up it can be done in summer time as well.My fondness went into the 44 magnums but I've yet to purchase a 4";I have a 3" & 5",but no 4"and that saddens me.

Due to the rising costs with the vintage Pythons I limit my use for both of mine and have switched to using the S&W 686 and 586 in 4" and 6" for my casual use.The Pythons have become collectables and I reserve mine for special occaissions, rather than every day or casual use.My 686 and 586 only cost me $300. each but they too are going up in value.S&W started putting the firing pins in the frames, mine has the hammer firing pins,so this may affect shooting the S&W in the future also because they might become collectable in time;too many changes.

Well, All I have is a 686 w/ a 4" bbl. I'm satisfied with hit. I'd be interested to see how a 6" compared. I do like the aesthetics of the 4" tough... nice balance. Not even 2 cents.

My 686 is 4" also but my 586 is a 6".The 4" probably fits the bill more for carry and duty than a 6",it seems to be more suited for combat. The only thing it needs is a Weigand Combat action job.

dubbleakshun: I like the 3 1/2 inch barrel on my model 27. Other .357's I have owned and shot had 4 inch barrels. I can't tell a lot of difference in accuracy in a half inch. As I have mentioned before, the 27 is too heavy for long distance carry, and certainly not good for regular concealed carry. Also, mine is a model 27-2 with firing pin on the hammer and chambers are recessed, Last time I looked, the value was around $300. Take care.
