I have been looking at the Beretta Cougar in .40 S&W and would really like some feedback from anyone who has shot or owns this pistol, whether in 40 or any other caliber. I would be using it for home defense so reliability is a key factor. Thanks in advance for your responses. Mike

I own a mini cougar in 9mm, its a DAO. I have been very displeased because of the heavy trigger pull and unbalance and inaccuracy of the weapon. I just bought a CZ 75, this is a superb handgun! Jeremy

I have a beretta cougar in 45 acp - it's my best shooter. I find the Cat-Pak grips I got with it to be superb. It's a fine gun. Beretta customer service sucks thoough. They have attitude big time.

I have a Cougar in 9mm and have been very impressed. It's fun to shoot and has been extremely reliable. I mostly shoot Brown Bear 9mm (russian cheep at $4.50/box) and have had no jambs or misfires. It's very accurate for a 3" barrel. Being a double rail gun, it's almost too fat for concealing but I have an IWB and no problems. The only thing you will probably have to deal with is the lack of accessories. Since it's not all that popular, as compared to Glocks or the Beretta 92's, you will probably have to go full retail for holsters and such. I've found a couple good holster's on Ebay for a fraction of retail but my main IWB had to be a $110.00 custom job. I don't know anything about Beretta's customer service as I have not had to deal with them on anything. My pistol just works.
Hope this helps.

My Mini-Cougar in .40S&W is extremely reliable. I have had no FTF, no FTE. With the short mag it is not as accurate as with the longer magazine, but when you consider you can chop an inch and a half off the grip length by changing mags, it's an advantage. The accuracy with the longer magazine (same grip length as a full size Cougar) is as good as the 92FS.
The rotating barrel set-up is the cat's meow. Unique.
It does not serve as my CCW, the HK's do that. If I had no other pistol to pack though, the reliablity of the Cougar would not bother me at all. It's really a non-issue.
Aftermarket stuff and holsters are rather scarce since it is not a popular pistol (although it should be......)
Things to look for....... wear inside the slide in the barrel lug track, wear on the barrel lug itself, and the lug that causes the barrel to turn.
One thing that I would consider for a home defense weapon, however is a 12 gauge pump shotgun with an 18 inch barrel and a light on it. Pistols are for packing. Rifles are for hunting, Shotguns are far superior when it comes to defending your home and life. No matter what gun you get, attach a light to identify your target with so you don't kill a friendly.

my buddy owned the .40 cougar for a couple of months before he sold it and i am fortunate to have shot it quite a number of times. although it looks like a mean gun, rotating barrel and all, i think it is quite heavy and a little large for concealment. it shoots great, no jams or failures and the accuracy is acceptable. i find it hard to continue after maybe 200-250 rounds due to ... (i don't know, maybe "fed-up" or my hands were aching due to the grip) but i can shoot the hk the whole day in the same caliber. obviously this gun is not for me, but please try it out before purchase because it is not a popular model for most shooters out there. Good luck.

I purchased one in 9mm, I very much liked the look, size and feel of the weapon but it's accuracy was pretty poor even at closer ranges. I was very disappointed overall. I lived a few miles from their factory in Maryland and have fired a number of their weapons and carried one in the service after they replaced the Colt 1911-A1. The Cougar did not live up to expectations, I think the rotating/locking barrel still needs work.
