Well Guys! My brother is riding out his 10 day wait for his 1911, fairly soon I will be making my bid.
After months of deciding what maker of 1911, it's down to what model. All this while I was thinking which direciton I wanted to go, inexpensive and build up, or high end and enjoy the ride? I was looking from Armscors, Charles Dalys, and Rock Rivers to Springfields, Para Ordinance, Kimber and even Wilson. The final 2 came down to a Springfield and Kimber, and in the last week my heart has been set on a Kimber.
Now to break it down to a model... in Kimber's line I was looking up and down from the basic Custom II to the CDP. For awhile I really like the Tactical and really love the Kimber Gold Combat with the rail even!
In the end I am pretty sure I will end up with.... the Kimber Custom II Royal. It is kinda what I was lookng to begin with when awhilr back I thought the Springfield Loaded was a front contender. It could change, but that's the direction I am going. Just need a little more in my slush fund, and I'll be in the 1911 club!

Congrats in advance! I've been eyeing one of those Kimbers lately myself. I like a couple of the models, too. They are indeed VERY sweet. Much like you, I'm trying to save up some cash to get one... I can only buy one gun a month here where I am , so I have time. MiKeMaN

I too really want one of those Kimbers. The Eclipse finish really catches my eye.
I have been hearing rumor about some problems with the series II pistols though. You may want to check it out. I would still buy one. Check out the 1911 forum.

One of the reasons I have yet to get a Kimber is that I want the Royal finish on a Series One. Roger's pistol is just to d**ned gorgeous! You are going to love these pistols Mitch. I resisted for years. It is like Lay's potato chips though. Once you start you cannot stop. If you like to tinker with guns, every pistol is viewed as a platform for development, from an Amscor to a Wilson. I am considering a Les Baer frame and slide package to build up now................ Latest 1911 in my stable...... www.msnusers.com/GUNMENII/xaviersguns.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=492

GET A GLOCK
Couldn't resist. ;D Actually I'm just jealous. I've wanted a 1911 style and would have bought a Colt Commander not to long ago if I'd had an extra 500 dollars lying around. It will probably be a long time before I get one. All well patients is a virtue right.

Sorry, Glocks are not my thing. I respect the hell out of them because many people love and swear by them, so Glock lovers don't be offended. I have even tested one out, but didn't feel it was any better than a Sig. But that's just me, I prefer and love my HK over the Glocks and would take any 1911 over a Glock any day. As you can see my 1911 bug is in a severe stage, so I have to add it to my collection.

I have seen STIs here and there and read about them in firearm mags, they look high quality as well. BTW - I never caught what STI stand for?

S.T.I. is ,Strayer and Virgil Tripp. Then you have a similar design called the Strayer - Voigt Pistols. These are the upper end spectrum of competition wide body frames for 1911s,and if I had my choice in frames for the ultimate shooter,I would look in their direction, but I would still look toward BarSto for a barrel with a Colt Slide.I've heard some about Virgil Tripp and the Tripp frames, and I've heard alot about Mike Voigt.

Mitch
I don't even own a Glock. I opted for the Steyr M40 when I was looking for the plastic fantastic. Here recently I have acquired an appreciation for the 1911s. The bug has gotten under my skin and is burying in deep. The 1911 will be my next gun.
Does anyone know what makes a Kimber pro any better than a Cot Commander. I told a dude I was looking at a Colt and he said I would be better off with the Kimber but really didn't say why.

You'll be better off with what you want.........
Kimber or Colt, both are good pistols. If you want a pistol you will have to do nothing to, but which will be the same pistol every Joe has, get a Kimber.
If you get a Colt, chances are you will have to alter it a bit to get it to be what you want, but it will shoot just as well. Once you are finished with it though, it will be a unique firearm.
Personally I like the Colt........mainly because I start monkeying around with a pistol almost as soon as I start shooting it.

There are several Colts available which comes from the Colt Custom shop that require nothing but ammo and range time.I've put almost 2,000 rds through the Colt Trophy without so much as a single hiccup, using the factory springs, next to pistols like the Wilson Combat CQB and the Wilson Protector.I paid $859. new for my Trophy and think it's one of the best buys in an all round 1911 that this kind of money can buy.The BoMar rear sight is just one of the many features that this pistol comes standard with.I did add a drop in Wilson Combat grip safety to mine, that required only a few minutes to install, but I did not change anything else to this pistol.http://groups.msn.com/1911SEMIAUTOCLUB

Flashpoint; What makes one pistol better than the other when comparing some 1911s like the Kimber,Colt.or Springfield sometimes depends on the person using the pistol.I've had my Series 70 Combat Commander for 14 years,I can put it in the safe for a year, bring it out,and shoot it just as good or better than the last time I fired it.The Kimbers are very good shooters also and deserve a very good look for a first time buyer. If I were in the market for the first time, it would be a dilema for me to choose among the many offerings today.

I'm getting tempted here....
I just saw some pricing on a Springfield Loaded at one of my favorite online stores - Impact Guns, for the Springfield Loaded - $629.00 + Shipping.
The Kimber Royal I am looking at locally is $789.00, or $729.00 plus shipping at Impact Guns.
When I compare the two - they "look" identical, except teh Royal has the better finish. In your opinion everyone, is the Kimber THAT much better?
